MMWR  2014;63:1–6.   Despite significant declines in cigarette smoking among U.S. adults over the past five decades, progress has slowed in recent years, and the use of other tobacco products such as cigars and smokeless tobacco has not changed. Additionally, the use of emerging products, including electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), has rapidly increased. This report provides the most recent national estimates of tobacco use among adults aged ≥18 years, using data from the 2012–2013 National Adult Tobacco Survey.

Vaccine Made from Complex of Two Malaria Proteins Protects Mice from Lethal Infection NIAID scientists have modified an experimental malaria vaccine that they originally developed more than a decade ago. The new vaccine features parts of two key malaria parasite proteins, AMA1 and RON2, which are delivered as a complex. In nature, malaria parasites use the AMA1-RON2 complex to invade red blood cells. The complex vaccine protected mice from a lethal form of malaria and a similar approach could be used in next-generation human vaccines. CDC: 75 Scientists Possibly Exposed to Anthrax As many as 75 scientists working in government laboratories may have been exposed to live anthrax bacteria, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday. The scientists are being offered treatment to prevent infection. "Out of an abundance of caution, CDC is taking aggressive steps to protect the health of all involved, including protective courses of antibiotics for potentially exposed staff," spokesman Tom Skinner said in a statement. "Based on most of the potential exposure scenarios, the risk of infection is very low." The potential exposure occurred after researchers working in a high-level biosecurity laboratory at the agency's Atlanta campus failed to follow proper procedures to inactivate the bacteria.
